Lantern monsters are winged hooded ghoul mobs carrying a dimly-glowing lantern.

Location

These monsters can be found in certain areas of the Evershade Forest, the Heartlands, and the Gem Mines.

Behavior

They are aggressive, usually attacking players once they are within range. Lantern Monsters attack by slashing their sharp wings at the player, dealing moderate damage of about 20% the player's maximum health. It should be noted that Lantern Monsters will sometimes follow their target over a distance, so players should run a long distance should they wish to escape from combat. Lantern Monsters are also able to fly, so even pegasi should be wary of them. The level 50 Lantern Monster found in the Evershade Forest can also attack with lightning that deals damage over time and slowly drains the player's energy for a short time, should it connect. The lightning attack can be avoided simply by moving around while fighting, though doing so may cause the Lantern Monster to use Discord Strike.

In an update released on June 12th, 2023 (v2023.02.01), a new skill named "Discord Strike" was introduced. Similar to the lightning attack, this skill is exclusive to the level 50 Lantern Monster. When Discord Strike is used, the Lantern Monster will emit 4 bursts of lightning, each damaging any players close by. Each time the skill hits the player it will also briefly inflict Discord Strike status, which briefly stuns the player. Discord Strike status also lowers the player's magic resistance by 100 and lowers health regen and energy regen by amounts large enough to likely reduce them both to 0. Discord Strike can also remove Stored Strike status from the player, as well as possibly forcing the player to release Adrenaline Surge and Wind Rapier stacks (only if said stacks have been built up enough to use their respective skills).
Discord Strike can cause even armored level 50 players to faint from full health if the entire attack connects due to the dangerous debuff it inflicts. The Lantern Monster seems to only use Discord Strike if the player is moving around it, as a sort of "punishment" for simply running circles around the Lantern Monster to avoid the lightning attack. If moving around while fighting said Lantern Monster, it is recommended you always move away from the Lantern Monster to avoid being in range of Discord Strike.

In an update released on December 17th, 2022 (v2022.05.01), a new skill named "Supernova" was introduced. Upon being defeated by having their health reduced to 0, Lantern Monsters found within the Evershade Forest may use Supernova. When Supernova is used, the defeated Lantern Monster will start glowing brightly for a brief period of time, then create a large explosion that deals major damage to players caught within the blast. The level 50 Lantern Monster found within the Evershade Forest will always use Supernova when defeated by depleting its health to 0. Lantern Monsters cannot use Supernova when defeated via soothing.
